Beauregard obviously expected the Federals to be more of a threat to his right since the roads from Pittsburg Landing to Corinth would lead the enemy more toward the right and right-center of the Rebel line. Also, the Federals might attempt to cut the Confederate supply line to the east via the Memphis & Charleston, hence Beauregard’s 18 Corinth: The Siege That Was Not determination to have strong support for Hardee. 13 Beauregard also attempted diversions intended to force Halleck to send reinforcements to middle Tennessee and Kentucky, as any move that could force reduction of Yankee troop strength and slow Halleck’s advance or perhaps even postpone his march would be worth trying.

14 Despite the disappointments, Beauregard determined to get his army, numbering some 50,000 men thanks to the addition of Van Dorn’s troops, ready to oppose Halleck’s advance. If Beauregard had known the truth about Halleck’s numbers, he might have reconsidered going to the trouble of deploying his army north and east of Corinth. Jefferson Davis did not want to lose Corinth, but would he want to risk having one of his major armies crushed? Beauregard, however, could not warn Davis about that possibility since Halleck’s numbers were unknown.

They envisioned the river as an avenue of invasion, both from the Gulf of Mexico on the south end and from Missouri to the north. As in Halleck’s vision, the Federal navy would approach Vicksburg from two directions, challenging the Confederacy’s ability to defend it. Vicksburg: First Attack 37 To the south, Flag Officer David Farragut of the Union navy, a Tennessee native, led a successful assault on New Orleans, which fell in late April after relatively weak Confederate resistance. Baton Rouge and Natchez soon surrendered with no resistance at all.
