Example text

The notion that scientific reasoning should be value-free is often based on the worry that allowing values to influence science will result in wishful thinking. But we will see that this is not the case; we can acknowledge important roles for values in scientific reasoning while insisting that it is unacceptable to draw conclusions just because one wants them to be true. Therefore, we need a different strategy for deciding when values have a legitimate role to play in scientific practice; we cannot merely point to examples where values have in fact influenced scientists.

On the other hand, if researchers found apparent evidence for cognitive differences between particular social groups, there is significant danger that this evidence would be taken up and applied in an unjustified manner to promote discrimination. Suppose, for example, that researchers found small cognitive differences on average between men and women in particular skill areas, such as science or mathematics. These differences would still clearly be dwarfed by within- gender differences in these abilities.

We will focus here on roles for values that are more subtle and debatable. Rather than focusing on aspects of science that are somewhat peripheral, most of the avenues for values discussed in this book involve various facets of scientific reasoning. These roles for values are less widely appreciated, more controversial, and particularly fascinating to explore. CONCLUSION If we take seriously the lessons of this book—in particular, the conclusion that the value-free ideal needs to be abandoned—then we have important work to do.
